The Department of English, Theatre, and Foreign Languages offers a Master of Arts in English Education, as well as the Secondary English (9-12) and Middle Grades Language Arts (6-8) Specializations of the Master of Arts in Teaching, and courses in the Language Arts concentration of the MAEd. in Middle Grades Education; these programs all provide candidates with opportunities for personal, intellectual, professional, and pedagogical growth.
In-service teachers with initial licensure who successfully complete the Licensure Concentration of the MA program obtain the North Carolina M license in English. Candidates who complete the MAT program obtain both an Initial and an M license in the appropriate area, English (9-12) or Language Arts (6-8).
College graduates with backgrounds in English or related fields may enroll in our programs to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in literature and literacy for various personal and professional proposes, including preparation to teach in community colleges.
Through graduate course work, candidates acquire, extend, synthesize, apply, and reflect upon their knowledge, expertise, and experience in literature, literacy, and pedagogy. The culminating product of the graduate experience for Licensure candidates is a Capstone Portfolio and Presentation, through which candidates document that they have met the following program standards:

- Standard 4: Student Learning
- Standard 5: Reflection
Candidates in the Thesis Concentration complete a six-credit thesis (optional for Licensure candidates), demonstrating their capacity for sustained independent intellectual work.
