Message from Chancellor Cummings: Roadmap to Fall June 19, 2020

BraveNation:

Over the past few months, we’ve worked with faculty, staff and students across campus to collaboratively come up with a plan to return to face-to-face classes in August that doesn’t compromise the acceptable standards for the health and safety of our university.

You can view my message introducing our Roadmap to Fall 2020 here. Today, I would like to share Bringing Our Braves Back: Roadmap to Fall 2020, which provides more detailed information on what is expected of our campus community and how we will safely return to the on-campus experience in August. This Roadmap is a living document and will change as new information and guidance become available, and decisions are made. I encourage you to check it often at uncp.edu/roadtofall.

Our Roadmap was formed in consultation with the UNC System Office and public health experts to outline principles and procedures that are in the best interest of our university and the health of our campus community. I’ve also attached a memo received yesterday from President Roper regarding face coverings in campus locations. As a System, we are fortunate to have a President in these times who has served as the director of the CDC and has direct access to leading researchers, public health officials and infectious disease experts. This has proven invaluable for all UNC System schools in formulating our collective approach. President Roper has laid an excellent foundation for incoming President Peter Hans, officially appointed earlier this morning.

At UNC Pembroke, our educational experience is marked by personal, individualized learning where students interact with professors and classmates on campus. Many faculty and students have expressed to me they prefer to teach and learn in our traditional method of face-to-face classes—where they feel they are most successful. It’s important that we get back to what we do best this fall and provide the true UNCP experience to our students.

However, as we return to campus, there will be new expectations of everyone. A healthy community takes each and every one of us, working together and recognizing how our own actions impact the health of others. We will ask that everyone on campus adhere to our “community health and safety standards,” and commit to the following Healthy Braves Pledge:

I acknowledge and pledge to abide by the following community standards because I am committed to ensuring the health and safety of our campus community:

·         I will properly wear a mask in all in-person classes and in all campus facilities and locations.

·         I will stand, sit, and wait a minimum of 3-6 feet from other individuals.

·         I will not get into an elevator with more than 1 other individual and we will both wear masks.

·         I will abide by all posted health and safety guidelines throughout campus.

·         I will actively self-monitor my own personal health and remain home when I am sick.

I understand these health standards are in place to not only protect my own personal health but that of my peers, faculty and staff I interact with while on campus. I also understand there may be consequences should I not abide by the above pledge.

I know many of you still have questions about what the fall semester will bring, and we will do our best to provide these answers as quickly as possible. Until then, please take the time to read through the Roadmap, continue to check your email for the weekly updates and educate yourself on COVID-19 to best protect yourself and others.

I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus soon.

Stay safe, healthy and informed. Go Braves!

Sincerely,

Robin Gary Cummings, MD

Chancellor

STUDENT HEALTH SURVEY

In an effort to best identify the needs of our campus community, we have created a student survey regarding your personal health. If you have received a diagnosis or presumptive diagnosis of COVID-19 (whether you have been tested or not), we request you complete the brief survey located in BraveWeb. Information obtained will only be used by Student Health Services and a small task force established to respond to COVID-19 on campus and identify the appropriate health and safety support needed. Completion of the survey is entirely voluntary but highly recommended. To access the survey, log into BraveWeb, and go to the Online Form Center.

SUMMER SCHOOL AND PROGRAMS

Consistent with the UNC System guidance, classes will be held online for summer sessions. For more information about summer classes available, please visit uncp.edu/summerschool.

FACULTY AND STAFF

STATEMENTS ON RECENT EVENTS

If you have not already read messages from Chancellor Cummings, campus and student leaders about the events in Minneapolis, you can find them here. We respect and appreciate the feedback and opinions of our students and welcome the opportunity to work together bringing about meaningful change. We look forward to engaging students and listening to all ideas that can lead us to healing and progress. If you would like to express your thoughts, we encourage you to reach out directly to Dr. Art Malloy and Dr. Lawrence Locklear in the Division of Student Affairs to start the conversation.

EMPLOYEE WORK & LEAVE GUIDANCE

We are actively working on a phased plan to return UNCP employees to campus safely in preparation to welcome our students back this fall. More information will be forthcoming for supervisors and managers in the days ahead. Existing operational guidance can be found here.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: FIRST-YEAR STUDENT ENCOURAGEMENT CARDS

We need your help! We would like to let those students who have just completed their first year at UNCP know we can't wait to see them again this fall. And so, we are asking for faculty and staff volunteers to sign up to handwrite notes to members of last fall's freshman class. Much like with our graduates, this small, simple act of kindness may just be the lift our students need to keep pushing forward. Volunteers will be provided with special notecards and pre-addressed, postage-paid envelopes. We will coordinate a socially distanced and safe drop-off or pick-up of all required materials. All we need you to do is write a note of encouragement and congratulations and drop it in the mail! SIGN UP TODAY!

BUILDING PREPARATION FOR FALL

We will begin taking campus buildings offline in the coming weeks to disinfect and prepare for the fall semester. The cleaning solutions used have the potential to cause exposed papers to crinkle. The impact should be minimal; however, if you are concerned about any exposed papers or valuable items in your office spaces, please come to campus to remove them or ask a colleague to assist if possible. Bound books should not be impacted during this process. If you have specific questions about the cleaning that will take place, please contact Facilities Operations.
