Dr. Gilbert L. Sampson, a former math professor and avid supporter of UNC Pembroke, passed away on June 13 at the age of 83.

Sampson was a professor of mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science for 42 years. He was the department’s longest-serving chair, serving 20 years from 1982 to 2002.

A Pembroke native and 1958 graduate of UNCP, Sampson’s family ties are deeply rooted in the history of the university. His father, James Albert Sampson, and Oscar R. Sampson, both served on the board of trustees. Sampson Hall, which formerly housed the administration building and library, was named for Oscar Sampson.

Sampson is survived by his wife, Annell Sampson and nine children. Click here to view the full obituary.
