Dr. Camille Locklear Goins, assistant professor and director of the First Americans Educational Leadership Program and Dr. Latoya Brewer, mathematics lecturer, represented UNC Pembroke and were among the presenters at the UNC System Learning and Technology Symposium 2023 held in Charlotte, NC.

The UNC System Learning and Technology Symposium, a peer-reviewed conference, showcased innovative and effective practices across the UNC System. Drs. Goins and Brewer’s presentations were among the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion & Inclusive Teaching tracks.

Goins’s session, “Engaging Students with Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices in Online Learning Environments,” provided participants with an opportunity to explore the development of an online learning environment through a culturally responsive lens. Through the integration of multimodal technology tools and creating and infusing cultural components, the session provided an engaging experience to empower higher education educators to lead in cultivating critical consciousness and to promote educational advancement for students with online teaching and learning.

Brewer presented along with Dr. Katie Johnson, assistant professor at Winston-Salem State University. Their session entitled “Equity in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics” addressed systematic barriers ethnically diverse students often face that lead to educational disadvantages. Utilizing Gutiérrez’s Dimensions of Learning Equity, participants were provided with literature that discusses the five equity-driven pedagogical models.

“The symposium provided a great opportunity to share best practices with our colleagues and to learn from other higher education professors across our UNC System,” stated Goins.

The symposium was Brewer’s first presentation since defending her dissertation in March.

Brewer stated, “The expertise and knowledge shared at the symposium was phenomenal. It was a privilege to collaborate with the community.”
