The Office of Student Inclusion & Diversity and the MLK Week Committee at UNC Pembroke recently announced events for MLK Week.

MLK Week––celebrated from January 14-21––recognizes the accomplishments of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and fosters conversations about social justice, civic issues, and engagement in the community. Events to be held during MLK Week include:

January 13-20

  • Banners with quotes from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be displayed in the mall of the Chavis Student Center. Sponsored by the Career Center.

Saturday, January 14

  • Never Walk Alone Day showcases unity among the student body, administrators and supporters on UNCP's campus. UNCP Athletics strives to empower the voices of all involved so that everyone is a part of the discussion. As a member of BraveNation, no matter your background, you will never walk alone, and your voices are being heard. Events will be held during the women's and men's basketball games against North Greenville in the main gym of the Jones Athletic Center. Follow UNCP Athletics on social media @UNCP_Sports. Sunday, January 15

  • Join us for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 4 p.m. at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, N.C. The guest speaker is civil rights curator Dr. Frank Smith. Limited transportation is provided (10 spots). Please RSVP if you plan to ride the van to the event.

Tuesday, January 17

  • MLK Week of Service: Academic and Military Outreach - Letter Writing. Join us in writing encouraging and heart-warming cards to deployed soldiers, the elderly and high school students from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Chavis Student Center. Learn more information about the event.
  • MLK Week of Service: Scotland Parks and Recreation - Parks Cleanup. Assist with picking up yard debris in the park in Laurinburg, N.C., from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Limited transportation will be provided. Learn more information about the event.
  • Join the Office of Student Inclusion & Diversity in the mall of the Chavis Student Center from noon to 2 p.m. to watch recordings of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. giving some of his notable speeches.
  • Percentage Night for UNCP Alternative Spring Break. Let's raise some dough! Join us from 5 to 8 p.m. at Your Pie Pizza in Lumberton, N.C., for Percentage Night to raise funds to send 14 students to the annual alternative spring break (March 4-11) in Baltimore, Maryland. Fourteen students will explore the experiences of Indigenous communities through the lens of social and racial equity via service with local organizations, education and reflective conversation. The alternative spring break is hosted by Community & Civic Engagement, the American Indian Heritage Center, and Student Inclusion & Diversity.

Wednesday, January 18

  • MLK Week of Service: CARE Resource Center - Food Pantry Stocking. Assist with restocking the shelves and refrigerators with food from Walmart from 10 a.m. to noon in the CARE Resource Center. Learn more information about the event.
  • MLK Week of Service: Hope Alive - Packing Backpacks. Help pack backpacks with non-perishable food items for local children from 2 to 5 p.m. Limited transportation will be provided. Learn more information about the event.
  • The Community Cafe is sponsored by the Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity from 3-5 p.m. to bring diverse perspectives to share knowledge, thoughts, experiences, and ideas towards a common goal. Reflecting on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s work and his role in grassroots activism, the first cafe will discuss how UNCP can continue to develop best practices to develop our students into change agents.

Thursday, January 19

  • MLK Week of Service: Lumberton Housing Authority - Painting Playground. Help repaint a playground in Lumberton from 9 to 11 a.m. Limited transportation will be provided. Learn more information about the event.
  • Join the Office of Student Inclusion & Diversity in the mall of the Chavis Student Center from noon to 2 p.m. to watch recordings of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. giving some of his notable speeches.
  • MLK Week of Service: Lumberton Parks and Recreation - Park Cleanup. Assist with cleaning up Luther Britt Park in Lumberton from 2 to 4 p.m. Limited transportation will be provided. Learn more information about the event.

Friday, January 20

  • MLK Week of Service: Partners in Ministry - Youth Mentoring. Join us to mentor the youth of Scotland County from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Laurinburg. Limited transportation will be provided. Learn more information about the event. 

Saturday, January 21

  • MLK Week of Service: Student Government - Campus Cleanup. Join the Student Government to clean up the UNCP campus from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Learn more information about the event.
