School of Business to hold immigration debate

UNC Pembroke’s School of Business will present “The Immigration Debate” as part of its Distinguished Speaker Series.

The event will be held at 3:45 p.m. at the University Center Annex on January 16. A reception will follow. The event is open to the public.

“The Immigration Debate” will feature David Bier and Jessica Vaughn – two renowned representatives of pro-immigration and national security viewpoints. Bier is an immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute’s Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity. Vaughn is director of Policy Studies for the Center for Immigration Studies.

Bier is an expert on visa reform, border security, and interior enforcement, and his work has been cited in the Washington PostNew York TimesWall Street JournalUSA Today, Politico, and many other print and online publications.

From 2013 to 2015, he drafted immigration legislation as senior policy advisor for Congressman Raúl Labrador, a member and current chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security. Previously, he worked as the immigration policy analyst at the Competitive Enterprise Institute and most recently as the director of immigration policy at the Niskanen Center.

Jessica Vaughn

Vaughn’s area of expertise is immigration policy and operations, covering topics such as visa programs, immigration benefits and immigration law enforcement. She recently completed several major projects on immigration and crime, including a Department of Justice-funded project studying the use of immigration law enforcement in transnational gang suppression efforts.

Her work as appeared in the Washington Post, New York Times, National Review, Boston Globe, The Economist, San Francisco Chronicle and other publications. She has testified before Congress several times.
