The 1887 Society will serve to recognize students who have made significant and meaningful contributions to the University community. Honorees will be selected based on the degree to which an applicant exhibits the values UNCP holds dear. The seven values—symbolized by the annual selection of seven honorees—are taken from the seven founders of the University.

Service – Reverend William Luther Moore (Waccamaw Siouan), cosigner of the petition to establish UNC Pembroke in 1887, was well known for his service to humanity.  Moore was said to be “wide awake to the people’s needs” (“Life of Rev. W.L. Moore” 3).  A commitment to service and collective responsibility for the campus and local communities is the legacy of Reverend Moore and the cornerstone of UNC Pembroke.

Learning – University founder Preston Locklear (Lumbee) understood the value and impact of  education for a person.  He was one of the first to initiate the movement that resulted in the founding of the University and served to support it on the Board of Trustees.  The continual pursuit of knowledge and self-awareness is the foundation of a life-long learner.

Integrity – James E. Dial, Sr.’s (Lumbee) hallmark was his honesty and his character.  Leadership is inherently a values-based endeavor, and clarification of and congruence with one’s own values is necessary for exemplary leadership.  Leaders are forged daily by taking small but courageous actions in alignment with their values. 

Courage – Isaac Brayboy (Lumbee) was a founder of the University.  According to a family oral tradition, lumber used in the construction of historic Old Main was supplied by his grandson Tecumseh’s sawmill located north of Pembroke.  The Brayboy family reminds us of our lifelong connection to UNC Pembroke, our founders, and each other.  By stepping forward courageously today, we empower the leaders of tomorrow.

Change – James “Big Jim” Oxendine (Lumbee) was committed to creating systemic change in his own community.  Not only was he pivotal in the founding of UNC Pembroke, Big Jim was the first American Indian elected county commissioner in Robeson County.  The goal of any good leader is—necessarily—positive change.

Connectedness – Olin Oxendine (Lumbee) had kinship ties to two other University founders.  Olin’s legacy acknowledges that leadership is a reciprocal and relational process.  Building trust and working together toward a common purpose prepare us for a better tomorrow.

Responsibility – John J. Oxendine (Lumbee) was not one of the four Trustees appointed by the General Assembly of North Carolina.  The original four were entrusted to elect three others, and trusted by his peers, J.J. Oxendine seemed an obvious choice.  Empowered by other leaders, J.J.’s legacy is one of responsibility and accountability—to himself and to his community.

Up to 14 finalists may be selected as a representative of the University values and the student body through their devotion to the campus and community. Candidates compete annually for this honor, of the fourteen, seven UNCP students will be recognized for their participation in campus life and their promotion of school spirit. These seven students will be inducted into The 1887 Society.  The 1887 Society will be presented and announced at the annual UNCP Homecoming Football Game. They will be presented with 1887 Medallions and honored on the Society Wall on the first floor of the James B. Chavis Student Center.

Eligibility Requirements: All candidates must:

• Have completed at least 12 credit hours at UNC Pembroke,
• Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher,
• Follow Campus Engagement & Leadership on at least one social media platform,
• Be in good standing with UNCP (academically, financially, conduct, etc.)  as determined by UNCP,
• Must submit a letter of support from a recognized student group or other University sanctioned involvement opportunity or department.
  • There is no financial support for sponsorship, only verification that the student is an active leader in a recognized group/department.
• Must be able to attend and participate in all required Homecoming activities as outlined in the Homecoming Schedule of Events. Please review the schedule of events before applying.

The application and selection process are as follows:

• A maximum 500-word (1 page, single spaced) letter of intent
  • Please explain why you are interested in being in the 1887 Society and why you would be a good candidate. Topics to consider are the seven values of UNCP and how they relate to your development.
• A professional headshot (to be used on the voting ballot)
• One letter of support from a recognized student group or department
• Leadership/activities Resume (to include leadership activities, campus club and organization memberships, experiential learning activities)
• Volunteer Resume (available on UNCP Serve). 

The applications will be reviewed by a diverse panel of judges, who will score based on both form and content.

The 1887 Society selection process is a distinguished and highly regarded competition. The applicants will be screened and ultimately selected based on their ability to articulate and demonstrate leadership skills, academic excellence, co- and extra-curricular involvement, service and commitment to the university and the community, school spirit, and exemplification of the values of UNC Pembroke.

Tuesday, October 1	Finalists will be notified, and interviews will be scheduled for the next stage. Judges will consist of staff, faculty, students, and/or alumni. Scores will be tallied and processed by Chavis Center Student Center staff.
Monday-Wednesday, October 7-9	Candidate Interviews. (Fall break is October 10-11)
Monday - Wednesday, 14-16	All finalists will be notified.
Sunday, October 20	Seven winners will be introduced to BraveNation at the Annual PAC Countdown
Monday, October 21	Top Hawk Survey Opens (Students vote on the Top Hawk). Survey Closes Thursday, October 24 at 11:59 PM.
Saturday, October 26	1887 Society Introduced at half time of football game.

A panel of judges will interview all the candidates and review all eligible application packets.

Candidates will be judged on the following:

• Application Information (40%)
  • Application Letter of Intent (15%)
  • Leadership/Membership resume and Volunteer Resume (25%)
• Interview (60%)
  • Communication (10%)
  • Involvement in co-curricular activities on campus (15%)
  • Reasoning on why they should be selected to be in the 1887 Society (10%)
  • Professionalism (10%)
  • Overall answers/responses (15%)

The decision of the judging panel is final.

 

 

Students selected to be part of The 1887 Society will have a variety of obligations to fulfill, including the 1887 Society Schedule of Events. Each applicant must understand that these appearances are mandatory and by accepting a position is also agreeing to fulfill them. In the event that a candidate is unable to fulfill the obligations of the below appearances, percentage points will be taken away from the candidate’s final student vote total. Unexcused absences will not be tolerated and will result in point deduction. Any schedule conflicts must be submitted in writing within 48 hours of The 1887 Society Orientation Meeting. Exceptions will be made based on individual cases in direct correlation to your academic success as a student.

Communication is a vital part of the holistic process. The 1887 Society represents some of the most outstanding students at UNCP, so both the honor and responsibilities are high. Communication is required throughout the process, especially in regard to attendance and tardiness. Lack of communication, missed mandatory events without prior approval/communication, and other disregard for policy and rules will result in a point deduction as seen fit by the Campus Engagement and Leadership staff. Please respect the process and your fellow students throughout all events.

Attire for the Homecoming Game is professional attire for each person. Headshots will be taken on this day on you in your medal for The 1887 Society Wall at the Chavis Student Center. Dress to impress.

While you are not required to attend all the events listed, it is suggested and advised that you do make an appearance at some to network with peers and alumni.
