UPDATE on Fall 2020 Calendar May 20, 2020

BraveNation:

Congratulations again on completing the Spring 2020 semester! You should be proud of this tremendous accomplishment.

Looking ahead to the Fall 2020 semester, it remains our goal at UNC Pembroke for you to return to the in-person classroom experience that we know many of you find encourages your success. Over the last several weeks, a working group of faculty, staff and student leaders have been working hard exploring the many possibilities to safely make this a reality.

With their input and currently available information, we have made the decision to adjust our Fall 2020 schedule, beginning the term 2 weeks earlier. Below are a few key dates:

  • The academic year will start with the first day of class on August 5;
  • Fall Break will be eliminated so the semester can conclude prior to Thanksgiving;
  • The last day of class will be November 12;
  • Final exams will be November 16-20;
  • Commencement will be held November 20 and 21; and
  • Final grades will be due by 5 p.m. November 23.

We are aware this may present unforeseen changes to your individual plans and schedules. However, we believe this option gives us the greatest chance to successfully complete the semester in person and offers maximum flexibility to respond to any continued changes that may come our way.

We know eliminating Fall Break is hard. But, reducing the opportunities for students and employees to leave campus and return in the middle of the semester helps us better manage potential virus spread. In lieu of the cancelled Fall Break, you will now finish the semester prior to the Thanksgiving holiday giving you an extended break prior to the start of the Spring 2021 semester.

We realize you most certainly have questions, and there are many details yet to determine in consultation with the UNC System, state leaders and public health officials. A task force with broad campus representation has been established to implement the new schedule including plans for housing, dining, safety protocols and instruction delivery models. We look forward to sharing their work with you in the weeks ahead.

During times like these, we all must remain resilient and adaptable, to control those things we know and to prepare for those yet unknown. Your faculty, staff and I are committed to keeping you healthy. Please know your safety is at the forefront while we develop innovative solutions to maintain a high-quality education environment.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we navigate this new landscape returning to our normal operations.

Sincerely,

Robin Gary Cummings, MD

Chancellor

WEEKLY UPDATE: May 11, 2020

Week of May 11, 2020

Congratulations on the successful completion of the spring 2020 semester! Throughout the summer, we are committed to keeping you informed on what’s happening on campus as we prepare to safely return for an on-campus fall semester.

To that end, this week we begin a weekly round-up of important reminders, links and updates you need to know. This weekly update will be shared at the beginning of each week.

If you have questions that aren’t covered here, please continue to send them to askUNCP@uncp.edu and check uncp.edu/ncov for updates.

FACULTY AND STAFF

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: CONGRATULATE OUR GRADUATES!

We would like to let each of our graduates know we are thinking about them and acknowledge their achievements. We are asking for faculty and staff volunteers to sign up to handwrite notes to members of the graduating class. Our goal is to have a note in the hands of every graduate by the end of the month. This small, simple act of kindness may just be the lift our students need to keep pushing forward. Volunteers will be provided with special notecards and pre-addressed, postage-paid envelopes. We will coordinate a socially distanced and safe drop-off or pick-up of all required materials directly with those who sign up. All we need you to do is write a note of encouragement and congratulations and drop it in the mail. Sign up to participate here.

UPDATED EMPLOYEE WORK & LEAVE GUIDANCE

The governor’s order to begin Phase I of reopening our state does not substantially change UNCP’s current operational guidance. Employees should continue working remotely wherever possible, and we will continue to limit the number of faculty and staff on campus to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. Employees who have been directed by their supervisors as necessary to support key and essential operations should report to campus. Important information on updated leave provisions, guidelines and instructions can be found here.
