About

Dr. Miranda Reiter is an Associate Professor in the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where she is the coordinator of the medical sociology minor. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Virginia and her M.A. in Public Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She was awarded her Ph.D. in Sociology, with a concentration in demography and a focus on health and mortality, from Utah State University. Dr. Reiter also worked as a postdoctoral research assistant in the department of Sociology at Sam Houston State University, where she studied rural health and health disparities. Dr. Reiter teaches a variety of courses, including introduction to sociology, social statistics, social research, death and dying, and health inequalities. Most of her research focuses on health disparities related to race and other social categories. Dr. Reiter has published several articles in the areas of health disparities and other social inequalities, and she has published textbooks in the areas of health inequalities from a social science perspective and sociological theory. Dr. Reiter is also a past President and current Secretary of the North Carolina Sociological Association. Outside of academia, Dr. Reiter enjoys spending time with her family and her cats, practicing Bikram yoga, running, and enjoying nature.
