UNC Pembroke senior Wanya Ward was beaming with pride while showing off his spacious bedroom, living room and other amenities featured in the newest apartments on campus.

“It’s very nice,” he said. “Everything is brand new from the furniture to the hardwood floors and all the appliances.”

Ward gladly offered tours of his first-floor apartment following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 29 to celebrate the newly-expanded University Courtyard Apartments. Four residential buildings were constructed, making room for 192 beds.

Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings said the demand for additional campus housing is due to increasing enrollment in the last two years. More than 2,300 students live in UNCP’s residential communities.

“We could not continue to grow without providing support and infrastructure for our students,” Cummings said. “When we bring students here, we make a commitment to them that they will have an uncompromisingly, exceptional experience at UNC Pembroke.”

The new 48 units, which feature three- and four-bedroom apartments, opened August 1. Furnished with all new furniture and appliances, the units offer free washing and drying laundry services to its residents.

“We are very excited to offer these new, state-of-the-art facilities to our students,” said Paul Posener, director of Housing and Residence Life. “They have their own bedroom, a full living room, laundry facilities and a kitchen. It couldn’t be a better setup for our students. We will continue to offer amenities, conveniences and comforts to our students as best we can.”

Metcon Construction was able to fast track the project, constructing the buildings in six months. Metcon president and alumnus Aaron Thomas said the quick turnaround is a testament to collaboration and teamwork among several stakeholders.

“It usually takes a year for a project like this to be designed and 12 to 16 months for construction. We are proud of the growth here,” Thomas said. “Many of us and our families are graduates of this university, so we don’t want to stifle that growth.”

The UNCP Foundation owns Courtyard Apartments which was constructed in 2001. The complex is located on University Road and features a pool, a beach volleyball court, a game room and a fitness center.
