Chemistry has always been Evert Garcia-Guzman’s strength academically.

However, when he enrolled at UNC Pembroke four years ago, Guzman decided to push the boundaries and challenge himself by studying physics–a subject guaranteed to offer the academic rigor he needed.

“I had never taken a physics course, and I wanted to learn more,” he said.

During his first year, Garcia-Guzman was encouraged by his physics professor, Tom Dooling, to participate in a high-powered rocketry competition. The following summer, Bill Brandon, a fellow physics professor, offered him a spot in his lab to research magneto-optics.

“Both of these experiences sealed the deal for me. The professors provided me with practical and hands-on experience and a level of challenge that pushed me to improve. Since then, I have had a blast researching with Dr. Brandon and Dr. Dooling,” Garcia-Guzman said.

Guzman, of Zebulon, N.C., graduated with cum laude honors with a degree in applied physics during spring commencement.

This fall, Guzman will further explore his newfound passion as he begins the physics Ph.D. program at the University of North Carolina. His focus will include biomedical physics.

At UNCP, Guzman was a member of the Maynor Honors College and a RISE Fellow. Reflecting on his academic journey, Guzman said he believes the faculty is by far the university’s greatest asset.

“I have only had overwhelmingly positive experiences with the faculty. They are fantastic teachers and mentors, and their passion for their disciplines makes learning much more fun. There is a lot of hard work required on the part of the student; however, the student will not get as far alone as they will with the aid of the professors, and it is much easier to become acquainted with your professors at UNCP,” he added.

“I am very grateful for all the help I have received throughout my undergraduate journey.”
