Alumna’s major gift will support experiential student learning
As a student service leader in UNC Pembroke’s Office for Community and Civic Engagement (CCE), Taley Hunt ’18, (MBA) ’20 was profoundly impacted by the opportunity to give back to others. “We went out to volunteer, not just in the local community but in the wider world,” said Hunt. “Having those opportunities really shaped the way I view the world. I’ve learned that when you give and are actively involved in your community, people see that and want to align with you.”
Cummings Aerospace Camp at UNCP prepares students for STEM careers
James Bell was all smiles as he watched the rocket he spent days building ignite and launch into the sky above the ROTC training field on the campus of UNC Pembroke. “This was awesome!” said Bell, pointing upward to the trail of white smoke.
UNCP’s Katie Manueles selected to ALL IN Student Voting Honor Roll
UNC Pembroke junior Katie Aguilar Manueles has received national recognition as part of the 2023 ALL IN Student Voting Honor Roll for her efforts in driving voter registration, education and turnout on their campuses. Manueles was among 175 college students selected from participating campuses nationwide. Last year’s midterm elections saw one of the highest youth voter turnouts in a midterm election in the last 40 years.
Bryan Sales wins Community Partner of the Year Award
Ever since joining the Biology faculty four years ago, Dr. Bryan Sales has been doing a lot of growing — plants, mentorships, collaborations, and partnerships. One of his most noteworthy partnerships involves the local community.
UNCP music faculty support Carnegie Hall Initiative in Moore County
The Department of Music at UNC Pembroke is well represented on stage during concerts by the Carolina Philharmonic, based in Pinehurst. Faculty from the Department of Music have performed with the orchestra since it was founded in 2009. The orchestra has partnered with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute and Moore County Schools for several years to provide music educational experiences for students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Lois C. Lewis Endowed Scholarship will aid non-traditional, local students
Storytelling wasn’t her profession, but Lois Lewis could tell a story with the best of them. “She told a good story,” said Tom Lewis of his late wife. “She came from a family of good storytellers and was brought up with the art.”
UNCP students serve Indigenous communities in Baltimore during Alternative Spring Break
More than a dozen UNC Pembroke students immersed themselves in service projects and leadership-building activities as part of an alternative spring break experience in Baltimore March 6-10. Students and staff partnered with several community-based organizations, spending a week volunteering at the Baltimore American Indian Center, Native American LifeLines, Breath of Life Lutheran Church and Baltimore Safe Haven. Baltimore is home to many Lumbee tribal members who migrated north after World War II seeking jobs.

UNCP alumnus among first Peace Corps volunteers to return overseas
UNC Pembroke alumnus Cedric Turner-Kopa is among the first Peace Corps volunteers to return to overseas service since the agency’s unprecedented global evacuation in March 2020. The Peace Corps suspended global operations and evacuated nearly 7,000 volunteers from more than 60 countries at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
