UNC Pembroke announces Chancellor’s, Honors list for Spring 2021
PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has released the Chancellor’s list and Honors list for Spring 2021. Chancellor’s List To qualify for the Chancellor’s List, a student must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.7 (out of 4.0) while taking at least 12 semester hours; none of the 12 hours may be Pass/Fail. ATHLETICS: Braves Officially Step Back Into Conference Carolinas Era
The anticipation of the last 14 months finally came to fruition on Thursday afternoon when UNC Pembroke athletics department guided 15 of its varsity athletic programs back home as a member of Conference Carolinas. A member of Conference Carolinas from 1976-92, the Black & Gold lived out its final 16 years as an affiliate of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the league, before being invited to join the Peach Belt Conference as an NCAA Division II institution in time for the 1992-93 athletics season.
UNCP, Robeson Community College partnership strengthens teacher pipeline
A new partnership between UNC Pembroke and Robeson Community College (RCC) will create a seamless path for aspiring teachers to become part of the state’s teacher pipeline. The initiative is designed to recruit teachers who have a desire to serve their communities. Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings and RCC President Melissa Singler launched the Brave Educator Grow Your Own Initiative during a signing event at RCC on June 24.
UNCP ranked among Best Colleges for Master’s Degree in Addiction Counseling
UNC Pembroke has been ranked among the Best College for Master’s Degree in Addiction Counseling. UNCP’s Master of Social Work program is ranked No. 33 in the country, according to Addiction Counselor, an independently owned educational resource. The MSW program offers a substance use and addiction recovery emphasis. A Graduate Certificate in Addictions Counseling is also available.

Five alumnae complete Doctor of Pharmacy program at Wingate University
Five UNC Pembroke alumnae recently graduated from Wingate University’s Doctor of Pharmacy program. Alex Miles Locklear, Megan Stevens Kwasnik, Sharon Ayioka, Brooke Chavis and Ashley Arcara were among the Spring 2021 graduating class. Arcara and Chavis graduated from UNCP in 2016. Kwasnik, Ayioka and Locklear earned their UNCP degrees the following year. Ayioka, a native of Kenya pursuing a career as an ambulatory care pharmacist, credits her UNCP professors Rachel Smith and Maria Santisteban for her academic success.
Alumnus Christian Ryckeley begins medical residency at Aventura Hospital
Fresh out of medical school, Christian Ryckeley will soon begin a three-year emergency medicine residency at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in Florida.
UNCP to grow aspiring educators through North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program
The bond Anthony Barton formed with other North Carolina Teaching Fellows at UNC Pembroke was more like family. His experience laid the foundation for his success, first as a classroom teacher, and now as a principal with the Public Schools of Robeson County. “We were a community. The teaching fellows all lived on campus and took the same classes. We were like a family who shared a strong bond. Honestly, without the support I received from Dr. (Karen) Granger and the Teaching Fellows program, I believe I would not have finished school.”
