In-Person Classes Canceled After 11 A.M.; UNCP Moving to Condition 1

UNCP will operate under Condition 1 (Reduced Operations) today, Monday, March 16, beginning at 11 a.m. due to the heightened possibility of significant rain, high winds and tornadoes across portions of North Carolina this afternoon.

All in-person classes after 11 a.m. are canceled. All fully online classes (both synchronous and asynchronous) will be held as scheduled. Students should check Canvas and email for any additional instructions from their professors.

Under Condition 1, mandatory employees must report to or remain at work. All other employees may choose to report late, leave early or not report to work; however, employees should notify their supervisor. Please review the university’s Adverse Weather and Emergency Events Policy for additional information.

The safety of our students, faculty and staff is our highest priority. Members of the campus community are encouraged to check the National Weather Service forecast throughout the day for the latest information and to monitor local media and weather apps for timely safety updates.

If you are on campus and the outdoor warning siren sounds, the Brave Alert emergency notification system will be activated, advising everyone to seek shelter.

If a tornado warning is issued for the area, please take the following precautions:

If you are indoors

• Move to a sheltered area such as a basement, ground floor bathroom, interior hallway or stairwell

• Stay away from windows and doors

• Get under a sturdy table or desk and cover your head

• Remain in a protected area until the danger passes

If you are outside

• Take cover immediately and lie flat in the nearest ditch or low area, covering your head with your arms

If you are in a vehicle

• Safely exit the vehicle and take shelter in the nearest ditch, ravine or culvert, covering your head with your arms
