9/9 Native South Art Show Returns to UNCP for Fifth Year

Native artists from across the Southeast will bring their work and perspectives to UNC Pembroke this fall for the fifth annual Nine-Nine Native South Art Show, presented by the Museum of the Southeast American Indian.
The juried exhibition opens with a public reception on Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in historic Old Main. The exhibition brings together Native artists from North Carolina and throughout the Southeastern United States, showcasing a diverse collection of paintings, beadwork, pottery, sculpture and mixed-media works. Many of the featured pieces will be available for purchase during the exhibition.
“This show has grown tremendously over the years,” said Nancy Chavis, museum director and curator. “Artists from across the South offer a unique cultural lens on history, identity and the world around them. The exhibition has brought long-awaited visibility and attention to Native art in the South while creating new opportunities for Native artists, including museum exhibitions and solo shows, and helping cultivate new collectors.”
The opening reception will give visitors an opportunity to meet participating artists and enjoy refreshments before the exhibition's award winners are announced. Cash prizes will be presented for first-, second- and third-place selections.
The exhibition will remain on display through March 26, 2027, giving visitors months to experience the artwork and explore the stories, perspectives and cultural traditions represented in the Native South.
Located in historic Old Main on the UNCP campus, the Museum of the Southeast American Indian serves as a cultural cornerstone for the region, preserving and sharing the art, history and identity of Indigenous peoples.
