HONORS COLLEGE FAQs

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER OF THE HONORS COLLEGE?

Once accepted to UNCP, all incoming first-year students are automatically considered for membership in the Maynor Honors College. Selected students with exemplary credentials will receive a personalized invitation directly from the Honors College, but any student with a HS or Transfer GPA of 3.5 or higher is welcome to submit an application by clicking here. All students admitted to the Honors College by invitation or application will also be automatically considered for our Honors Scholar Fellowships.

CAN I HAVE ANY MAJOR AS A MEMBER OF THE HONORS COLLEGE?

YES. Honors students come from across the university and our flexible curriculum allows you to earn honors credit for classes within any degree program. And graduating with honors doesn’t require any additional time to earn your degree.

ARE UNCP HONORS CLASSES DIFFERENT FROM HIGH SCHOOL HONORS CLASSES?

YES. High school honors programs often prioritize equipping students for the competitive college application process. The Maynor Honors College focuses on creating dynamic, well-rounded students who can succeed in a wide variety of professional and academic contexts.

ARE HONORS COURSES MORE DIFFICULT THAN OTHER CLASSES ON CAMPUS?

NO. Honors students are expected to engage more deeply with the questions and materials presented in class. But rather than simply adding more requirements, this is accomplished through smaller class sizes, more primary sources, and an increased role for discussion.

DO I HAVE TO LIVE IN THE HONORS LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY (LLC) ON CAMPUS TO PARTICIPATE?

NO. Participation in the Honors College takes many different shapes and forms and all qualified students are welcome. However, many students cite the LLC in Oak Hall as one of their favorite aspects of the Maynor Honors College experience!
