Women's Empowerment Summit set for March 1

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke will hold the 2019 Women’s Empowerment Summit on March 1.

It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in University Center Annex.  

The Women’s Empowerment Summit will be a full-day event allowing attendees from across the state to engage in meaningful conversations with motivational speakers. This year’s theme is Phenomenal Woman.

The cost for the general public is $45; $35 for UNCP employees; $30 for veterans and senior citizens; and $25 for UNCP students. A table for eight can be purchased for $350.

First Lady Rebecca Cummings will provide opening remarks.

Guest speakers will include Sonia Pressman Fuentes, pioneer and a leader of the Second Wave women’s feminist movement; Nikki Jacobs, fashion model and UNCP alumna; Dr. Cindy Love, director of Professional Development at Saint Augustine’s University; LynnDee Horne, licensed professional counselor supervisor in North Carolina and director of UNCP’s Counseling and Psychological Services; and Evelyn Cheek, office manager of Counseling and Psychological Services at UNCP.

A panel discussion entitled ‘Strength, Courage and Wisdom’ will include District Court Judge Brooke Clark; Bryana Carrington, UNCP student and Miss Greater Carolina; Retired Navy Commander Brigit Carter, associate dean for Diversity and Inclusion in Duke University’s School of Nursing; Faline Locklear Dial, Robeson County commissioner; and Cheryl Davis, chief medical officer for Scotland Health.

“The summit will again feature the retail therapy portion of the program – S.O.S. Support our Sister,” said Mary Beth Locklear, director of the Office for Regional Initiatives.

“Women entrepreneurs will be in attendance throughout the summit selling their special goods and products.”
