UNCP’s Magally Ortiz-Rojas receives Community Impact Student Award

UNC Pembroke junior Magally Ortiz-Rojas is the recipient of the 2023 Community Impact Award by NC Campus Engagement for her commitment and contribution to civic and community engagement.

Ortiz-Rojas was honored for her achievements during the biennial Citizenship Service Networking and Partnership biennial student conference at N.C. State University on November 4.

Ortiz-Rojas was selected because her role as a student leader has been instrumental, evident through several impactful projects in collaboration with various campus departments and community organizations.

In one instance of civic engagement success, she initiated a campuswide voter registration drive, resulting in an outstanding 50% increase in student voter registration. Her motivation to elevate the student voice and improve student engagement during local elections significantly contributed to a more politically active campus community.

As a student leader, Ortiz-Rojas organizes many community service and environmental sustainability projects to improve campus life, including providing fresh produce to low-income families, lowering food costs and reducing the UNCP carbon footprint.

In addition to these projects, Ortiz-Rojas spearheads a successful fundraising campaign for the CARE Resource Center, raising $10,000 for a local nonprofit focused on food and hygiene donations. Her tireless dedication to civic and community engagement has made a tangible impact on campus and inspired others to volunteer and engage in community service activities.

Her extensive engagement and impactful work across various volunteering activities serve as a testament to her unwavering commitment to making a lasting difference within the community. Her ability to foster partnerships and promote long-term sustainability in community initiatives showcases her dedication to effecting enduring change.
