UNCP announces 1887 Society Award inductees

UNC Pembroke has announced the newest 1887 Society Award inductees. They are Gabe Hall, Ranya Johnson, Cara Martin, Magally Ortiz-Rojas, Whitney Peck, Shelby Perry and Madison Schwenneker.

The 1887 Society Award recognizes outstanding students committed to the university’s values––service, learning, engagement, leadership, integrity, school spirit and courage. The seven values honor the university’s seven founders.

The inductees will be recognized at halftime of the Braves homecoming football game against Glenville State on Saturday, October 28. Their portraits will be installed in the Chavis Center, and their names will join the permanent list of inductees on the wall.

Hall, a senior biology major, is a chancellor’s ambassador and has been involved in the Student Government Association, previously serving as parliamentarian.

Johnson, who is studying business administration major, is a current SGA senator and manager for the Care Resource Center. A senior, Johnson is also a LEAD Fellow and an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member.

Martin, a senior double majoring in psychology and sociology, is a wellness ambassador and the Dialogue Council for Student Affairs chair. She is the founder and president of Beyond the Lines.

Ortiz-Rojas, a junior double major in political science and social work, the SGA vice president, a Gen-One peer mentor, a member of the Latin Student Union, Maynor Honors College, Pre-Law Society and a chancellor’s ambassador.

Peck, a senior studying political science, has been a chancellor’s ambassador, an SGA senator and served on the Student Conduct Board. She is currently a peer academic leader and president of the Pre-Law Society.

Perry, a senior mass communication major, has served on the Pembroke Activities Council, All-Greek Council and is an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member.

Schwenneker, a senior, is also studying mass communication and has been an SGA senator, a Students as Partners program member, a resident advisor, a Pembroke Singers member and Maynor Honors College member.

“The 2023 class of 1887 Society inductees includes a diverse and active group of student leaders,” said Dr. Jeff Howard, vice chancellor for Student Affairs. “These students embody UNCP’s mission and values and have distinguished themselves with records of accomplishment demonstrated by their personal, professional and educational growth and development.”
