at Pembroke
"WNCP-TV" is a program service of the Department of Mass Communication and a learning laboratory for the televisual arts. Television programs are produced by UNCP students and faculty in classes or as part of departmentally approved extracurricular productions. These talk shows, newscasts, sports, special event coverage and other videos can be seen on channel 6 on Time Warner Cable in Robeson County.
The Department of Mass Communication operates this community access channel for Time Warner Cable. This includes playback of our own live and taped programming on the channel as well as scheduling shows submitted by Robeson County residents and resident-organizations.
Select programs produced under the WNCP-TV banner also air on channel 62 (WFPX-TV), an Ion affiliate transmitting out of Lumber Bridge and reaching at least 200,000 television households across six counties. Academe Today, produced for UNCP's College of Arts & Sciences, can also be seen on cable channel 17 on Time Warner Cable in Scotland County.
These broadcast operations support, and are supported by, academic coursework in the Department of Mass Communication. In modeling "real world" production and programming scenarios, they provide relevant, hands-on experiences by which students can acquire and hone technical skills and put theory into practice. Student producers, production assistants, and programming clerks can earn progressively responsible positions in WNCP operations for credit, work-study, or on a volunteer basis, under the supervision of the broadcast faculty and staff.
