The College Panhellenic Association (CPA) promotes sisterhood, academic excellence and philanthropic endeavors. Diversified Greek Council

Joining a Sorority or Fraternity at UNCP

Joining a fraternity or sorority is an exciting part of your time at UNC Pembroke. Students explore opportunities to connect, grow and belong through recruitment processes tailored to different organizations. Here’s what you need to know about eligibility, council-specific processes and academic standards.

To join any fraternity or sorority at UNCP, you must meet these baseline requirements:

Note: Freshmen can join starting their first semester, with academic eligibility determined by their high school GPA. Upper-class students must meet the university’s educational standards or the chapter’s requirements, whichever is higher.

Fraternities and sororities use various methods to introduce interested students to their organizations. The joining process depends on the type of fraternity or sorority, categorized under the governing council that oversees them. You are encouraged to attend informational sessions, events or recruitment periods to learn more about chapters that align with your values and interests.

  • Academic eligibility is verified before extending membership invitations.
  • The university recognizes new member processes only during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Summer or out-of-session recruitment processes are not permitted.

What Sets Greek Life Apart?

Coming to college is one of the major life changes that your student will go through. Joining a fraternity or sorority at UNCP can make the transition easier! Developing life-long friendships with the members in their chapter (the local name of a nationally affiliated fraternity or sorority) helps make the campus smaller. For many members, these chapters become a home away from home. In addition to the brother/sisterhood, every chapter promotes the values of enhancing leadership, scholarship, philanthropy/service and financial responsibility among its members.

How Will Greek Life Support My Student Beyond College?

The life-long friendships your student will make through their chapter can last into post-college years. Membership in a chapter can be a life-long experience. Joining now is an investment in your student’s future. Wherever a member ends up after college, chances are they will be able to find an alumni chapter or other members of their fraternity or sorority in the area. In addition, Greeks have formed national networks for its members that could help them find jobs or internships.

Will My Student's Grades Be Compromised by Joining an Organization?

Academics are a top priority in Greek life. Studies have shown that the GPA among Greek members has been consistently higher than the non-Greek student's GPA. When students join, they become part of a larger community of students who value their academic goals at UNCP. This group understands the challenges the new member is facing and can provide support in many areas. Each chapter on campus has a scholarship officer or new member educator who initiates programs within the chapter to encourage high academic achievement. There are various resources for members on campus, such as the Center for Student Success, time management workshops, academic advisors, etc.

Advisors play a vital role in the success of fraternities and sororities by offering continuity, guidance, and university connection. Through their support, advisors help strengthen communication with campus partners and national organizations, while also fostering the personal and professional growth of chapter members. Engaging with faculty/staff advisors and other key stakeholders ensures chapters are well-supported and positioned for long-term success.

How to Establish a Greek Chapter at UNCP

The fraternity and sorority community at UNC Pembroke is dynamic and constantly evolving, seeking to attract organizations that exemplify the best of fraternal values. As part of our mission to support sustainable, impactful chapters, UNCP has established clear guidelines for starting new Greek organizations. Note: Submissions are currently closed. Please check back for updates on future expansion opportunities.

Expansion provides opportunities to enhance the student experience by introducing organizations that align with UNCP’s values and bring unique benefits to students and the campus. When considering starting a new chapter, ensure your organization will:

  • Offer meaningful benefits to students, organizations and the University community.
  • Contribute positively to the growth and diversity of the Greek community.
  • Provide a sustainable foundation for long-term success.

To ensure the success of all fraternities and sororities at UNCP, prospective organizations must follow these steps:

  • Contact the James B. Chavis Student Center: Speak with the Assistant Director for Fraternities and Sororities before initiating recruitment activities.
  • Affiliation with Governing Councils: Organizations must affiliate with and gain approval from the appropriate governing council (IFC, CPA, Hok Nosai, NPHC or DGC).
  • Register as a Student Organization: All new chapters must complete university registration and adhere to UNCP’s student organization policies and fraternity and sorority life procedures.
  • Review Expansion Procedures: Refer to the detailed Expansion Process and Procedure document for a complete guide.

The UNC Pembroke College Panhellenic Association follows the structured extension process outlined by the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). This process ensures that all new chapters are established under the NPC's Unanimous Agreements and extension protocols. Key points include:

  • Only appropriately accredited, bachelor-degree-granting institutions with proper authority can host new NPC chapters.
  • The NPC Panhellenic Extension Committee monitors and advises institutions and organizations during the process.

Organizations interested in expanding to UNCP must complete the Expansion Proposal Form to submit their application. Proposals sent via email will only be accepted if specifically noted.
