Sen. Richard Burr named spring commencement speaker at UNC Pembroke

U.S. Sen. Richard Burr will deliver the commencement address at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s spring undergraduate ceremony. 

The ceremony will be held on the south quad lawn on May 5.

Long-time UNCP nursing professor Dr. Cherry Maynor Beasley has been named the keynote speaker for the graduate ceremony on May 4. Beasley, the Belk Endowed Professor in Rural and Minority Health, is the recipient of the 2017 Award for Excellence in Teaching.

UNCP awards 515 degrees during winter commencement

The chair where Troy Love has been receiving dialysis treatments for the past three years was empty Saturday.

Love adjusted his schedule for good reason.

He was among the sea of 515 graduates during the 2017 Winter Commencement at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

“I am excited,” said Love of Red Springs. “I would have never thought I would ever get to this point, knowing that a couple of years ago I could have been dead.”

692 graduates earn UNCP degrees

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Brandon Lee Locklear plans to write a book about his life experiences.

The first chapter is sure to include his time as a student at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Locklear was among the 692 graduates who took part in two commencement ceremonies on Friday and Saturday. The remaining chapters in Locklear’s biography will include his next move – the U.S. Army.

He will begin training to become an operator of unmanned aircraft systems.

“I am going to fly drones,” said Locklear, who lives in the Prospect community.

UNCP alumnus Judge James Lockemy to deliver keynote address during UNCP spring commencement

Judge James Lockemy, a UNCP alumnus, will serve as the keynote speaker for The University of North Carolina at Pembroke during the spring 2017 Commencement.   

Lockemy will speak at the graduate ceremony at 7 p.m. in the Givens Performing Arts Center on Friday, May 5.

Lockemy will also deliver the keynote address at the undergraduate ceremony on the Quad at 9 a.m. on May 6. The Quad is located between Old Main and Mary Livermore Library.
