The Teaching and Learning Center and the Department of Social Work presented a two-day workshop on "Teaching and Learning at a Distance" with Dr. Deb Gearhart, Director, eCampus, Troy University, on Monday, February 8 and Tuesday, February 9. The first day was devoted to Teaching with Videoconferencing. Topics to be covered include: pedagogy for videoconfering, tips for teaching by videoconferencing, and practicing the principles of teaching with videoconferencing. The second day was devoted to Developing and Delivering Online Instruction. Topics include developing materials, fostering interaction, assessing student performance, planning and time management, quality assurance, and blended learning. In preparation for the implementation of the QEP, special emphasis will be placed on creating and evaluating writing assignments in the online and hybrid environment
Dr. Deb Gearhart is the director of eCampus for Troy University. Twenty one of Troy University’s degree programs are offered online. Dr. Gearhart has worked in the field of distance education for 24 years. Previously Deb served as the founding Director of E-Education Services at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota and was there for the 11 years. Before joining Dakota State she spent 10 years with the Department of Distance Education at Penn State. Deb was an associate professor for educational technology at Dakota State University teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She has co-authored at textbook entitled Designing and Developing Web-Based Instruction and is editing another publication titled Cases on Distance Delivery and Learning Outcomes: Emerging Trends and Programs, which was released in December 2009. Deb is a master reviewer and trainer for Quality Matters. Dr. Gearhart has earned a BA in Sociology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She earned a M.Ed. in Adult Education with a distance education emphasis and an M.P.A. in Public Administration, both from Penn State. Deb completed her Ph.D. program in Education, with a certificate in distance education, from Capella University.
