The UNC Pembroke Indigenous Cultures and Communities (ICC)
Graduation Requirement
1) Why does UNCP have the ICC requirement?
As North Carolina’s only Historically American Indian University, UNCP has a unique opportunity and responsibility to educate our students about the history, cultures, community relationships, and challenges of local Native Americans and other Indigenous peoples. The intent of the ICC graduation requirement is to instill in all UNCP students an increased awareness and appreciation of Indigenous cultures and communities, both in Southeast North Carolina and worldwide. By providing this educational opportunity, UNCP aspires to honor and recognize the contributions of the American Indian communities so deeply connected to our university through its founding and history.
2) What is the ICC requirement?
The goals of the ICC requirement are to ensure that UNCP graduates learn to
- develop an understanding and awareness of the social, political, economic, and sovereignty issues Indigenous peoples and communities faced in the past and/or are now facing;
- experience and analyze the communities and cultures, including but not limited to languages, literature, arts, music, and/or spiritualities of Indigenous peoples;
- enhance their ability to apply knowledge and agency to assist and support Indigenous communities in meeting their goals.
3) How do I meet the ICC requirement?
Completion of the ICC requirement is attained through approved traditional courses and/or co-curricular learning experiences provided at UNCP. The required number of courses or co-curricular experiences will depend on when you enter UNCP.
I am an incoming first-year student:
Students entering as first-year students are required to take
EITHER
two (2) approved ICC designated 3-credit hour courses
OR
one (1) approved ICC designated 3-credit hour course AND one (1) ICC designated
and department approved co-curricular learning experience.
I am a transfer student with fewer than 60 transfer credit hours:
Students transferring to UNCP with 60 (or more) transfer credit hours are required to take
EITHER
one (1) approved ICC designated 3-credit hour course
OR
one (1) ICC designated and department-approved co-curricular learning experience.
Students transferring to UNCP with fewer than 60 transfer credit hours are required to take
EITHER
two (2) approved ICC designated 3-credit hour courses
OR
one (1) approved ICC designated 3-credit hour course AND one (1) ICC designated
and department-approved co-curricular learning experience.
6) How do I know which courses will meet the requirement?
Courses that are ICC designated will be identified in a similar manner as WE/WD courses. The Course Section Search link on Braveweb identifies those sections that are ICC designated course sections. Any course section that is labeled “Indigenous Cultures and Cmty.” under the Attribute column is ICC designated and will fulfill the requirement (see image below).
Please note that ICC designation is based on instructor and section. Designation of one section of a course does not mean that all sections of the course are designated. Only designated sections will count towards the ICC graduation requirement.
7) How will I know if I have met the requirement?
The completion status of the ICC graduation requirement will be monitored through the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS). As with other tracking requirements, the ICC requirement will be rated as “Complete”, “In Progress”, “Unfulfilled”, or “Planned”. All students are encouraged to run a degree audit and should actively plan for completion of the ICC requirement while outlining the tracking for their degree.
