Peer-to-Peer File sharing, popularly known as P2P, is technology which allows computer users (peers) to find and share digital files.

All students, faculty and staff at UNCP should be knowledgeable concerning file sharing/file downloading. In compliance with the Higher Education Reauthorization Act, DoIT provides this page of links for you to better understand P2P (Peer-to-Peer) file-sharing/file-downloading and the laws concerning this popular method of enjoying music, movies and more.

There are both legal and illegal means for obtaining your favorite music, popular movies, and other needed files. DoIT wants to ensure you have necessary information to legally obtain and enjoy digital media. Illegally downloading and sharing copyrighted files carries with it serious consequences and UNCP is directed by law to inform you of those consequences and to address copyright violation notices. Our goal is to assist you in understanding the possibilities and consequences of illegal P2P (Peer-to-Peer) file-sharing/file-downloading on UNCP’s network while also being informed of the legal alternatives.

UNCP wants you to make the right choices while still enjoying your favorite entertainment media.

The sharing and downloading of copyrighted materials is governed by federal law as defined in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
