Lecturer, Musical Theatre Program Director
Nathan Thomas is a professional musician (conductor/pianist/arranger), theatre practitioner (director/music director/actor), and teacher of both music and theatre (with prior appointments at the University of Cincinnati, Western Illinois University and as program director for the musical theatre program at Western Carolina University).
He has toured as music director and/or keyboard player all over the U.S. and Canada, as well as to Brazil, China, Japan, and Russia, on shows including the Hal Prince Show Boat, Fiddler on the Roof (Topol/Theodore Bikel/Harvey Fierstein), Fosse, 42nd Street, The Sound of Music, and Cats. Among his New York credits are the Broadway productions of Fosse and Annie. He also played first keyboard for Monty Python’s Spamalot at the Wynn Las Vegas.
At UNCP, he has directed and music directed eleven shows, including Spring Awakening, Next to Normal, Assassins, and The Theory of Relativity, and co-directed and performed in Slowgirl. Some favorite non-UNCP regional and university productions have been Betrayal, Candide, The Real Thing (director); Cabaret, Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, Side By Side By Sondheim (director/music director); Chicago, Les Misérables, The Bridges of Madison County (music director); Beehive, Lady, Be Good!, West Side Story (pianist); Oleanna (actor/director); Richard 3, Seascape With Sharks and Dancer (actor).
