Biography

Katya Lee Hutchinson began teaching at UNCP in 2022, after acting as instructor-on-record at East Carolina University for two years during her time as an MFA candidate. Katya worked as a part of a larger cohort of instructors supplying Shared Experience module courses, as well as independently leading process-based printmaking courses. Providing students with a sturdy foundation for progress, Katya has transferred her experience to UNCP where she instructs Elements of Design and Printmaking.

After completing her BA at University of Hawai’i at Hilo in 2019, Katya went on to complete her MFA in Printmaking from East Carolina University in 2022. With a focus on traditional process intaglio etchings, her prints have been shown across the United States, in Croatia, and in Canada. Heavily influenced by fiction and literature, Katya’s current work is focused on themes of escapism, isolation, and social evolution.

As an educator, Katya fosters success in each student by providing a holistic approach to foundation and survey studies, incorporating relevant contemporary and diverse research alongside traditional considerations. Her teaching philosophy revolves empowering artists to feel confident in expressing their own unique narratives with strong visual language.
