About

Judy started teaching at UNCP in Summer 2002. Today, she has 22+ years of university teaching experience.

Judy teaches journalism and mass communication courses. She served as adviser to the department's award-winning student newspaper, The Pine Needle, for 13 years. She serves on the board of the Friends of the Library here on campus. 

She received a UNCP Outstanding Teaching Award in 2011. Before coming to UNCP, she had received a Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education. She was invited to present a workshop on "Ensuring Student Success in a Web-Based Course" for the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges and Universities, and has spoken or written on media pedagogy in other venues.

Beyond the classroom, Judy has 40+ years professional writing, editing, graphic design, production and media management experience in newspaper, magazine and book publishing. She has been a managing editor of two national magazines and a book publishing company as well as vice president of a publishing house where she supervised editorial, design, production, manufacturing and sales in addition to creation and design of national advertising campaigns and media placement. Most recently she has managed publicity campaigns on a volunteer basis for First United Methodist Church in Laurinburg, N.C., and earned a "Special Mission Recognition Award" from United Methodist Women.
