Geology and Geography

Bryce Canon National Park

From Zion National Park, we drove east to Bryce Canyon National Park where we saw the youngest layers of sedimentary rocks on our trip. The uppermost strata in this area of Bryce Canyon are freshwater limestones, limey siltstones and shales of the Tertiary Claron Formation. The variable coloration of the layers results from oxidation of iron and manganese interstratified with unoxidized layers.
