UNCP trustees pick Dr. Breeden Blackwell as chair


Dr. J. Breeden Blackwell was elected chair of the Board of Trustees of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Dr. Blackwell, who will serve a one-year term, was joined on the executive committee by Dr. Donald Bonner as vice chair and Dr. Freda Porter as secretary.

Dr. Blackwell is a retired educator, a Cumberland County commissioner and a 1968 UNCP graduate. He was appointed to the board of trustees by Gov. Mike Easley.

A Rowland, N.C., resident, Dr. Bonner is a retired educator and state legislator. He is an appointee of the UNC Board of Governors.

From Pembroke, N.C., and a 1978 UNCP graduate, Dr. Porter earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Duke University and was a professor at the University. The owner of Porter Scientific, she was also appointed by Gov. Easley.

Dr. Blackwell said he appreciated the support of his fellow trustees and said UNCP is a University on the rise.

“I am excited and humbled by the vote of the board of trustees,” he said. “In 1964 when I came to this University, I never thought that I might one day be chair of the board of trustees of the institution that I love so much.

“I proud the progress we have made here,” Dr. Blackwell continued. “We are truly a shining light for our state.

“I give credit to Chancellor (Allen.C.) Meadors and to present and past trustees, faculty and staff,” he said.

Dr. Blackwell said 2007-08 will be an important year at UNCP with football returning for the first time in 56 years..

 “We’ve got a lot to do this year,” he said. “I’ve ordered my season tickets.”

Dr. Blackwell is a former president of the N.C. Principal’s Association, president of the N.C. Association of County Commissioners and Fayetteville city councilman. He is currently serving his third term at a county commissioner.

From Bennettsville, S.C., Blackwell is married to retired educator Cathy Johnson Blackwell, and they have an adult son, Ryan.
