Dr. Tamara Savage, assistant professor in the Department of Social Work at UNC Pembroke, served as a 2022 Center for Health Equity Research (CHER) Institute Fellow.

This year’s institute––held June 6-11–was held virtually. In previous years, faculty from across the country would convene at California State University at Long Beach to participate in the six-day, intensive research training experience.

Participants received mentorship by a team of nationally recognized social and health behavior research experts, including webinars to provide additional training to faculty participants and others who are interested in health equity research.

The Institute is an annual gathering of early-career faculty from minority-serving institutions of higher learning across the country, pairing them with seasoned mentors to help better prepare them for National Institutes of Health (NIH) research support. The skills and collaboration gained in previous CHER Institutes have proven invaluable for attendees in promoting diversity and equity in community-based health research.
