GI Jobs magazine has named UNC Pembroke to its list of “Military Friendly” schools for 2014.

The designation puts UNCP in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide. GI Jobs list, which it has published annually for the past five years, is the gold standard for schools who would serve veterans, active duty servicemen and women and their families.

This fall, UNCP has 859 students with military connections and the university’s location near Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune make a compelling case for recruiting and serving the needs of this community, said Dr. Cammie Hunt, associate vice chancellor for Engaged Outreach.

“UNCP is committed to improving the quality of life throughout southeastern North Carolina by serving active duty personnel, veterans and their families at this university,” Dr. Hunt said.

Col. Mike Clawson (ret.) is the coordinator of UNCP’s Office of Military and Veteran Service.

“Being a military friendly school is more than a label, it is earned,” Clawson said. “UNCP deserves a pat on the back for recognizing the need for assistance to veterans who are transitioning into higher education. Making the transition is something that may require special assistance and support.”

UNCP has an office on Fort Bragg and offers several complete graduate and undergraduate programs there. UNCP also supports a Student Veterans of America chapter.

GI Jobs recognized UNCP efforts by naming it the its Military Friendly Schools List publication each of the five years of its existence.

“Inclusion on the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools® shows The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’scommitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” GI Jobs stated in its news release on the 2014 list. “The 1,868 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.  These schools have world-class programs and policies for student support on camps, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility and other services to those who served.”

UNCP has signed an agreement with the Special Forces to provide four-year degrees online for soldiers who have earned associate degrees from Fayetteville Technical Community College.

UNCP offers the following programs on the base: the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and Bachelor of Science in business administration (management concentration); Graduate programs include the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and the Master of Arts in teaching, physical education (sports administration and exercise and fitness), middle grades (6-9) (mathematics and social studies), mathematics education (grades 9-12) and social studies education (grades 9 – 12); and both undergraduate (BSW) and graduate (MSW) degrees in social work.
