Braves win first conference crown in softball
UNC Pembroke captured its first Peach Belt Conference title in softball on April 7 when the Braves swept a doubleheader from the University of North Georgia.
The championship marks the first outright title that a women’s program at UNCP has won in the PBC. In 1993, the volleyball team was co-champions playing a limited schedule and finishing with a record of 4-1. The preseason coach’s poll picked the Braves to finish in 8th place.
As regular season champions, the Braves secured the top seed in the conference tournament scheduled for later this month. They go into the tournament as the number five ranked NCAA Division II team in the nation and number one in the region.
On April 14, the Braves closed out the regular season defeating Lander in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, winning game one, 4-3, and game two, 9-0, in five innings on Saturday afternoon.
UNCP improved to 41-10 overall and 17-1 in PBC play. The Braves also finish the 2008 season with a 26-2 record at home. Freshman Martika Elmore picked up her 21 win of the season.
On April 7, UNCP won game one, 3-1, with Elmore picking up her 20th win of the season. Elmore, from Fayetteville, N.C., threw nine strikeouts in the contest. Fellow freshman Whitney Landwermeyer pitched a five-hit shutout against the Saints (29-9) in the second game for a 4-0 win.
