Erin Tesoriero, a sophomore studying chemistry at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, has been presented with the 2016 Community Impact Award.
The award is given annually by North Carolina Campus Compact, which recognizes students who make a difference in their community. Tesoriero was recognized for outstanding leadership and service.
North Carolina Campus Compact is a statewide coalition of 36 public, private, and community colleges and universities that share a commitment to civic and community engagement.
Tesoriero was one of 25 students selected by their campus for the 2016 honor, joining more than 200 college students recognized by the network since the award was first presented in 2006.
Tesoriero, who is from Charlotte, is an active student leader in UNC Pembroke’s office of Civic and Community Engagement, serving as a day of service site leader and a dedicated volunteer.
She stands out for her work coordinating students who volunteer at the university’s CARE Resource Center, an on-campus food pantry and professional clothing closet that serves students, staff, and community members.
Tesoriero created a new orientation process to streamline and improve the experience of CARE Resource Center volunteers; the process was successfully implemented this fall. Last spring, she was honored by UNCP for serving 250 volunteer hours on various campus and community projects.
Sandy Jacobs, associate director for Service Learning at UNC Pembroke, nominated Tesoriero for the award.
“Erin is a model student,” Jacobs said. “She is academically gifted and a model student when it comes to giving back to the community and her fellow students.”
“She is highly respected by the faculty and staff and is well known by Chancellor (Robin) Cummings.”
“We couldn’t ask for a better student,” he said. “She’s above par.”
Tesoriero and other award recipients were honored at the Compact’s annual Citizenship Service Networking and Partnerships (CSNAP) Student Conference, at the University of North Carolina at Asheville on November 12.
