UNC Pembroke is canceling all in-person Homecoming activities in response to health and safety concerns and large gathering restrictions related to COVID-19.

The university is considering opportunities for virtual events during Homecoming Week set for October 12-17.

One of the longest-standing traditions at the university, Homecoming traditionally brings thousands of students, alumni and community members to campus to participate in several events.

“Our decision to cancel Homecoming was extremely difficult but finding ways to operate while prioritizing the safety of the entire university community–including alumni–remains our priority,” said Steve Varley, vice chancellor for Advancement.

“The Homecoming tradition at UNCP is an important moment for the entire university community to come together, so we share in your disappointment at its cancellation this year. We remain optimistic that we can find and develop safe, virtual venues that connect our more than 30,000 alumni with their alma mater. We can strengthen our connection with alumni, support one another, and prepare for an incredible Homecoming 2021.”
