Thanksgiving food basket coordinator Marvin “Tubby” Jacobs got in at 4 a.m. the night before from a student leadership conference in Orlando, Fla.
UNCP Student Government Association (SGA) President Marko Gospojevic squeezed some volunteer time between two tests.

SGA Vice President Brock Clinton was all smiles as he hoisted turkeys in and out of the van.
The SGA project gathered up 20 baskets, complete with turkey, stuffing, pies and all the trimmings for needy families in the nearby community. They delivered the baskets to the Lumbee Tribe offices in Pembroke the day before Thanksgiving and the last day of classes before the holiday break.
Jacobs, a junior mathematics education major from Hoke County, explained his community service philosophy.
“I do what I can,” he said. “You only have to do 50 volunteer hours for LSOP (Leadership and Service Opportunities Program) recognition. I did 461 hours last year.”
Among other projects, Jacobs mentors 10 Hoke County high school students for UNCP’s Upward Bound program. But he doesn’t take much credit.
“You can’t do anything without a lot of help,” Jacobs said. “Open your heart, and the windows of heaven will overflow with blessings.”
At the Lumbee Tribal Office the food is delivered
Listed among those who helped out with the food basket project were the Pan Hellenic Council and Sodexho Food Services, which operates UNCP’s cafeteria and two smaller campus restaurants.
“I’m going to eat a big turkey dinner tomorrow,” said Sodexho General Manager John Campbell. “I’ll feel a lot better knowing we helped out some families in need.”
Sodexho helped purchase the turkeys and pies and unloaded them from freezers into waiting vehicles.
At the tribal offices, students met with the families who picked up the baskets.
“This is great,” Gospojevic said, “but I’ve got another exam.”
Next up for the SGA, food baskets for Christmas. They are working with Carolina Arts Network, Phi Sigma Nu and Alpha Pi Omega. Collected items will be delivered on December 16.
