Steven Arndt named vice chancellor for Finance and Administration at UNC Pembroke


Steven A. ArndtSteven A. Arndt has been named vice chancellor for Finance and Administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings announced. 

The university’s Board of Trustees approved Dr. Cummings’ recommendation during its quarterly meeting on Friday, April 22. 

A seasoned professional, Arndt brings more than 28 years of higher education experience in facilities maintenance, campus planning and construction management. Arndt currently serves as associate vice chancellor for Facilities at N.C. State University. 

“Steven has a long history in his field with experience in a number of universities,” Dr. Cummings said. “We are excited to welcome him to the UNC Pembroke leadership team and our community.” 

“He brings the experience to guide our daily financial and administrative functions and, importantly, the vision to develop a long-term strategy for our campus and its operations,” Dr. Cummings continued.  “This is yet another example of the caliber of talent UNCP is adding to our already strong bench.” 

As a key member of the chancellor’s cabinet, Arndt’s responsibilities at UNC Pembroke will range from finance, management, and budgeting to facilities, strategic planning and human resources. 

Arndt will serve as the chief financial officer of UNC Pembroke and the UNCP Foundation, Inc. Arndt will also be responsible for the university’s $116 million total budget and $19.3 million endowment. 

A number of departments report to the vice chancellor for Finance and Administration, including: Business Services, Financial Planning and Budgeting, Controllership, Human Resources, Facilities Management, Bookstore and Food Services. A total of 233 full-time and part-time employees report to Arndt. 

Arndt succeeds Carlton Spellman, who served as interim vice chancellor for Finance and Administration. 

Arndt said he is eager to begin his new job, which will become effective June 6. 

“I am thrilled at this opportunity and thrilled with the chance to join Chancellor Cummings’ team,” Arndt said. “I am very excited about coming to UNC Pembroke and making a difference.” 

“I am really looking forward to this new chapter,” he said. “I am ready to do good things for (UNC) Pembroke.” 

Arndt’s expertise includes facilities management, building maintenance, grounds management, space planning, design, construction, utilities, energy management, and sustainability. 

During his tenure at N.C. State, Arndt oversaw the completion of construction projects totaling more than $300 million, including a $120 million addition and renovation of the student union. He was also responsible for a $129 million, 129-bed residence hall complex as well as a $17.2 million indoor athletic practice facility. Arndt is currently managing the $35 million renovation project of Reynolds Coliseum. 

Arndt is also currently serving as interim associate vice chancellor for Real Estate Operations at N.C. State. 

Prior to joining N.C. State, Arndt served 14 years as director of Facilities Management at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He also held the positon as director of the Physical Plant at Fayetteville State University and construction project manager at Brown University in Rhode Island. 

A native of Downers Grove, Illinois, Arndt earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana University in 1981. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served four years as an engineering officer aboard USS Fletcher.

He later obtained a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Roger Williams University and a master’s degree in business administration from Fayetteville State University. Arndt also holds a diploma in facilities engineering management from N.C. State University. 

He is a member of the Association of Physical Plant Administrators, International Facility Management Association, Society of College and University Planners, and certified as a Facilities Management Professional. 

Arndt and his wife, Maria, have a daughter, Tonya.
