The senior capstone exhibition 'Deeply Rooted' is on display at the AD Gallery

A senior capstone exhibition entitled ‘Deeply Rooted’ featuring the works of seven UNC Pembroke art students is on display at the AD Gallery.

The spring show features six undergraduate art students: Cameron Collins, Aly Horn, Donique McLaurin, Leah Moore, Alana Peterson, Jasmin Sanders, and Maggie Trimpe. The exhibit will be on display through April 7. A reception will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on March 31.

The exhibition's theme focuses on connections with nature, the world and those we share our lives and culture. Students tackle relationships with cultural identity, family, emotions, environment, and society. The exhibition shows the growth of the students’ journeys in uniquely creative ways.

Peterson’s artwork narrates her ongoing battle against depression and anxiety due to having to mature at a young age through surrealistic crime scenes. Trimpe's art highlights humanity's relationship with nature while illustrating flora for science and our parts in establishing invasive species.

Horn has extensively researched floriography, the language of flowers, which culminated in depictions of their meanings in conjunction with human ideas, relationships, and emotional states. McLaurin’s work focuses on empowering the African American community and how it must stay connected to its roots, not forgetting those who have passed and fought before us.

Moore’s series, Love and Grief, shows a sequence of illustrations that follow the narrative of a man and his cat. Sanders’ artworks consist of four black women, all of different colors, including hair color. In Collins three most recent works, he experiments with photo bashing and digital collage.

The A.D. Gallery is located on the first floor of Locklear Hall. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This exhibition is free and open to the public.
