UNCP’s Model United Nations team had another exemplary conference, returning from the 2018 Spring Southern Regional Model United Nations Conference in Charlotte with eight awards, doubling their total from last year and nearly equaling the tally (eight) that the team won during the Fall conference in Atlanta.

UNCP, representing Belarus, Egypt, Germany, and Malaysia, took 26 students to Charlotte and returned with three individual awards, two team awards, and three team position paper awards, making the Braves again one of the most decorated teams at the near 500-student conference.

This year’s head delegates were Mia Baxley (Egypt), Katie Patton (Germany), Devon Hester (Belarus) and Yara al-Bayyari (Malaysia).

Dr. Kirill Bumin (Political Science and Public Administration), the faculty coordinator of this semester’s team, commented on the team’s performance.  “I am incredibly proud of our team’s accomplishments. Our students’ hard work, dedication, and perseverance throughout the semester and during the conference clearly paid off.”

In the last four academic years, UNCP’s Model United Nations team has won over 70 individual and team awards, providing a clear testament to the quality of UNCP students and the value of active learning and extracurricular involvement and expanding both the reputation and the footprint of the university.  A special thanks go to our wonderful head delegates – Mia Baxley, Katie Patton, Yara Al Bayyari, and Devon Hester – who dedicated an extraordinary amount of energy to propel their teams to such a strong finish.

The team’s next conference is in November in Atlanta, where they represent Kuwait, Mexico, and Nigeria.  Students interested in participating in the program should contact Dr. Kevin Freeman at kevin.freeman@uncp.edu.
