Mass Communication instructor Cle Cousins recently earned first place for her paper, A History of Stereotyping in the Black Sitcom.  The paper examines comedic stereotyping in shows ranging from the first black sitcom, Amos ‘n Andy, to current day Blackish.  Cousins, who came to UNCP in 2018, will present her paper at the annual conference of the Broadcast Education Association in Las Vegas in April. Cousins won the top prize in the multicultural studies category. BEA is a leading international academic media organization.

At UNCP, Cousin teaches broadcast journalism and various mass communication courses. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. through Regent University in Virginia Beach. Prior to becoming a college instructor, Cousins was a journalist for more than 20 years and worked for numerous newspapers and television stations in the Southeast. As a journalist, she won several awards for her writing and reporting, including the South Carolina Press Association Award for Featuring Writing, The Cox Newspapers Award, and the Southern Journalism Award. Cousins was also a member of the news management team at WNCT-TV when the station won the Edward R. Murrow Award for coverage of Hurricane Floyd in 1999. She is a native of Pender County and lives in Fayetteville.
