LRA Field dedicated March 15

The curtain rose March 15 on LRA Field and a new era for UNC Pembroke softball.

Lumberton Radiological Associates (LRA) threw out the first ball during the LRA Field dedication, and the Lady Braves threw out Chowan College in both halves of a doubleheader, 4-1 and 6-5.

UNCP unveiled a new scoreboard honoring its newest sponsor, Lumberton Radiological Associates. LRA contributed $50,000 to the First and Ten Campaign for Football and Athletic Excellence.

LRA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ben Gasque summed up the moment saying, “we’re going to take great pride in having LRA forever associated with this facility.”

Softball coach Steve Johnson said it is “another step toward making this one of the premier softball facilities in the state.”

LRA may have gotten naming rights, but UNCP’s grounds crew had bragging rights Wednesday for grass that was Major League green framed by a classic red clay infield.

Dr. Gasque is pleased with the partnership.

“We consider UNCP to be a very important partner,” he said. “The University is a drawing card for the recruitment of new industry and professionals to our area.”

Chancellor Allen C. Meadors thanked LRA as an outstanding community partner.

“Lumberton Radiological Associates care about their community, and they care about giving back to the community,” Chancellor Meadors said. “Their gift will help this University reach its potential.”

Launched in the wake of UNCP’s decision to return football to Pembroke after a more than 50-year absence, the First and Ten Campaign passed $1 million in its first phase. The goal is to raise $4 million to support all athletic programs.
