On Oct. 26, 2022 and Feb. 15, 2023, the Department of English, Theatre, and World Languages (ETWL) hosted events for English majors.

In the fall, Dr. Mike Berntsen and Dr. Laura Hakala planned an induction ceremony for new members of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society at UNCP. Three new members, Haley Brixey, Eros Howard, and Kasandra Pond were inducted, and Kaley Tritt was awarded the Grace Loving Gibson Scholarship.

“The event was a good opportunity to build community in our department among students and faculty,” stated Dr. Hakala, the Sigma Tau Delta advisor. Dr. Hakala praised the inductees, and she noted, “I look forward to showing them how the honor society can further their academic achievements and professional development.”

During the spring semester, Dr. Wendy Miller, Department Chair, hosted an English Majors Meeting. English majors joined in games such as Literature and Pop Culture Jeopardy and enjoyed refreshments provided by the Department of English, Theatre, and World Languages.

Professors also showcased upcoming courses to give students a chance to engage with the professors teaching various courses.

“The greatest benefits that students gain from participating in the Majors Meeting include the chance to interact with faculty and to learn about planning their future coursework,” said Dr. Berntsen, Assistant Department Chair.

Majors Meetings at UNCP have been a tradition for many years and build strong relationships between faculty and students.
