Chancellor Cummings’ Statement on US Capitol Events

Like many across our nation, I am profoundly saddened and disturbed by the events that took place yesterday at our nation’s Capitol. This violent attempt to overturn an election is an attack on the very democracy upon which our country stands. Moreso, it is an attack on the beliefs and ideals we each hold dear as Americans. It is time for a peaceful transition to the new administration, just as we have done since the first transition in 1797. It is well past time for us to put aside the hatred and divisiveness and come together with respect for each other to make our communities, our country, our world better. And when we do that, we can heal these wounds, learn to listen to each other again, and be proud to be a citizen of this great nation. Our country is quite simply better than where we find ourselves today.
