Lowry, who founded her business in 2005, finalized the scholarship on April 4. The Caring Touch Home Health Care Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to the outstanding Master of Business Administration (MBA) student of the year.
The scholarship was fully endowed at $10,000, and Lowry contributed an additional $500 so the award could be made in 2007.
Chancellor Allen C. Meadors said it was a perfect “win-win” situation. As a business start-up a team of UNCP’s MBA students consulted with Lowry to aid the young enterprise.
“This is a perfect example of how a University should interact with the community,” Chancellor Meadors said. “This is a win for our students and a win for a local business.”
Headquartered in Pembroke, N.C., Caring Touch had fewer than 100 employees when the MBA team arrived and employs more than 450 today. UNCP’s MBA director Dr. Carmen Calabrese echoed Chancellor Meadors’ sentiments.
“Donna Lowry’s start-up is a model of how to start a business, and she gave our students real world experience,” Dr. Calabrese said. “This project was a blessing to our students who won a statewide award when they presented it.”
Lowry, who also hosted a second team of business students, said the consulting was helpful.
“Dr. Calabrese put together two brilliant teams of students,” Lowry said. “The teams have been an inspiration to us, and they were instrumental in making our vision a reality.
“When Dr. Calabrese proposed a scholarship to me, I jumped at the chance,” she said.
Caring Touch Home Health Care serves eight counties with home health care services. Lowry, a Pembroke resident, has won several awards, including Robeson County Entrepreneur of the Year and Outstanding Small Business Award from the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC). Caring Touch Home Health Care of Pembroke was a client of UNCP’s SBTDC.
