The BraveNation Powwow and Gathering (BNPG) will be held Saturday, March 23, in the Jones Athletic Center at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Everyone is welcome.

Grand entry is at noon. The doors open to the public at 10 a.m.

Join BraveNation as we celebrate the rich history and culture of America’s Indigenous peoples. The powwow and gathering features competition dancing and various art, food and information vendors. This is an alcohol- and drug-free event. Last year, the BNPG–the largest college powwow in North Carolina–had over 2,200 people in attendance.

Admission

  • $5 for adults
  • $3 for elders (60+) and ages 7-18
  • Free for children (6 and under) and UNCP students, faculty, and staff with a UNCP ID
  • Non-UNCP college student admission (with college ID) is $3
  • Debit card and/or exact change is preferred for paying admission; cash will be accepted.

Commemorative T-shirt

  • A commemorative t-shirt will be available for purchase at the powwow. Adult sizes (SM - 4XL) are $15 and youth (XS - L) are $10. The shirt features the red-tailed hawk (UNCP’s mascot) and traditional Southeastern American Indian motifs.

Dancer and Drum Registration

  • Dancer registration will be open from 10 – 11:30 a.m. Each dancer and drummer will pay the general admission fee of $5 and be allowed entry into one competition.

Dance Categories and Prize Monies

  • Drum Contest
    • 1st: $500, 2nd: $350 and 3rd: $200
  • Adult (18+)
    • 1st: $200, 2nd: $150 and 3rd: $100 (men’s southern and northern traditional, men’s Eastern Woodland, women’s northern and southern traditional, men’s fancy, women’s fancy, men’s grass, and women’s jingle)
  • Teen (13-17)
    • 1st: $100, 2nd: $75 and 3rd: $50 (teen boy’s traditional, teen girl’s traditional, boy’s fancy, teen girl’s fancy, teen boy’s grass, and teen girl’s jingle)
  • Junior (6-12)
    • 1st: $75, 2nd: $50 and 3rd: $25 (boy’s traditional, girl’s traditional, boy’s fancy, girl’s fancy, boy’s grass, and girl’s jingle)
  • Tiny Tot (5 and under)
    • Gifts will be given to each dancer.

Vendor Registration

  • Vendor registration
    • $50 (art with table)
    • $40 (art without table)
    • no cost for informational vendors (only 1 table provided)
  • There is limited availability for art/informational vendors. No food vendor spots remain.
  • Vendors will be approved based on items sold. A limited number of vendor spaces are available. Completing the vendor registration does not guarantee the vendor will be accepted.
  • Vendors will receive email notification if they are selected and confirmed as a vendor. Online vendor registration is available at uncp.edu/powwow.
  • Bag chairs and selling merchandise by non-approved vendors are not allowed.
  • Vendors will be in the auxiliary gymnasium (next to the main gym). Each vendor will be provided with one six-foot table and two chairs. Vendors can purchase a maximum of three spots (based on availability).

  • Tax-deductible gifts will be accepted. Gifts can be made online at uncp.edu/give/powwow2024. Gifts can also be mailed to The UNCP Foundation, PO Box 1510, Pembroke, NC 28372. Checks should be made to The UNCP Foundation with Powwow noted in the memo line.

Additional Information

The BraveNation Powwow and Gathering is hosted by the American Indian Heritage Center (AIHC) and the BraveNation Powwow and Gathering Planning Committee. The AIHC is the hub for American Indian students at UNCP. The AIHC also provides cultural, social and academic programs for American Indian students, as well as educational programming for non-Native faculty, staff and students.
