ReVisions: Best Student Essays of UNC Pembroke

ReVisions

About ReVisions

ReVisions publishes the finest original nonfiction work composed by undergraduate students at UNCP. Submissions must be nominated by a UNCP faculty member. Students who believe they have a strong nonfiction work for submission are encouraged to ask a faculty member to nominate it.

We accept submissions from any field or major, and we accept a variety of nonfiction works, including

  • Academic essays (e.g. literary criticism; informative, argumentative, or analytical essays; white papers; technical or scientific essays, etc.)
  • Reviews (e.g. literature reviews; book reviews; movie reviews; theatre reviews, etc.)
  • Original research (e.g. case studies, empirical studies, ethnographic research; applied research, etc.)
  • Creative nonfiction (e.g. memoirs; travel essays; feature news stories; popular science articles, etc.)

The nomination deadline for each year's spring issue is December 31. Nonfiction works written during the calendar year previous to the publication year are eligible for nomination even if the student has graduated.

Review & Selection Process

Nonfiction works are blind reviewed. Reviewers favor original nonfiction works that are

  • Audience-centered (i.e. Can readers who aren't familiar with the topic relate to and understand it?)
  • Organized clearly (i.e. Are there clear thesis statements and topic sentences? Are subheadings used?)
  • Researched well (i.e. Are claims well supported with sufficient quality research?)
  • Clear and coherent (i.e. Does it make sense, and does it flow from paragraph to paragraph?)
  • Grammatically correct (i.e. Do grammatical or punctuation errors interfere with prose?)
  • Cited correctly and consistently (i.e. Have writers used MLA, APA, or other styles correctly throughout?)
  • Visually supported (i.e. Can writers support their prose with Creative Commons or Public Domain images?)
  • Interesting to the UNCP community (i.e. Does it add to knowledge of cultural, social, racial difference?)
