The Office of Student Inclusion & Diversity and the LGBTQIA+ Committee at UNC Pembroke recently announced events for Pride Month to be held April 1-30, 2024.

The purpose of Pride Month is to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual or aromantic, and others) individuals. Pride Month is celebrated nationally in the United States in June and traces back to the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan–a tipping point that changed LGBTQIA+ activism and the Gay Rights Liberation Movement in the United States. The first Pride March was held in New York City in 1970 on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. The last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as “Gay Pride Day.” The one-day celebration grew into a month-long series of events.

UNC Pembroke’s events to be held during Pride Month are listed below.

April 2, 2024

• Pride Month Board Game Night will be held at 6 p.m. in Old Main 124 (Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity). Sponsored by the LGBTQ+ Committee.

April 3, 2024

• Join us for Poetry, Pride, and Pie, Oh My! from 4 - 6 p.m. in the University Writing Center in the D.F. Lowry Building. Sponsored by the University Writing Center and the student organization Spectrum.

April 9, 2024

• The BravePride Festival will be held from 4 - 6 p.m. in the University Center Annex. Events include a panel of queer students will share their experiences, free shirts, Pride Bingo, painting nails, and vendors. Sponsored by the LGBTQ+ Committee.

April 17, 2024

• Lavender Graduation recognizes graduates who self-identify as LGBTQIA+. RSVP required. Sponsored by OSID.

April 19, 2024

• Drop by the mall of the Chavis Student Center from 2 - 4 p.m. to write positive messages and encouraging letters to members of the LGBTQ+ community. Sponsored by the LGBTQ+ Committee and Inkwell.
