Ribbon of Hope Grant

The Literacy Commons at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke received a $25,000, 3-year grant from the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation. The Ribbon of Hope Grant is intended to offer organizations a one-time opportunity to expand and/or enhance existing programs or provide seed funds for a new initiative.

This grant will allow the Literacy Commons to expand their efforts to promote literacy across the UNCP service region, and specifically in K-12 schools. Specifically, funding from this grant will allow the Literacy Commons to provide year-long tutor-mentor services to third graders in up to three schools in the local community. The tutor-mentor services will focus on literacy development, reading and writing remediation specifically. At the conclusion of each year, students’ efforts will be recognized through a celebratory event and the publication of an literary magazine highlighting their original work.
