The Literacy Commons at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke received a $25,000, 3-year grant from the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation. The Ribbon of Hope Grant is intended to offer organizations a one-time opportunity to expand and/or enhance existing programs or provide seed funds for a new initiative.
This grant will allow the Literacy Commons to expand their efforts to promote literacy across the UNCP service region, and specifically in K-12 schools. Specifically, funding from this grant will allow the Literacy Commons to provide year-long tutor-mentor services to third graders in up to three schools in the local community. The tutor-mentor services will focus on literacy development, reading and writing remediation specifically. At the conclusion of each year, students’ efforts will be recognized through a celebratory event and the publication of an literary magazine highlighting their original work. For more information, read the full press release below.
The Literacy Commons is partnering with four local schools by offering tutor-mentoring services in the following schools in the Public Schools of Robeson County:
Pembroke Elementary School
Peterson Elementary School
Prospect Elementary School
Union Elementary School
