The purpose of the Student Government Association is to represent and safeguard the interests of students. It is a political organization providing students with an avenue for action on matters pertaining to student rights and welfare. Although discipline is the legal responsibility of the administration, the principle of student government is fully supported by the administration and faculty.
All students attending UNCP automatically become members of the Student Government Association. SGA functions through its elected representatives and is subject to the general administrative authority of its sponsor, the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. Every full-time student who has at least a 2.5 cumulative average (on a 4.0 system) has the privilege of seeking positions in the senate by either at-large application and interview or election.
The Student Government Association is elected by the student body each spring according to the Governing Documents of the organization.
The SGA is composed as a presidential unicameral system. The Executive Branch is composed of the President, Vice President, Chief of Staff, Secretary, Treasurer, and the Public Relations Officer. The senate shall maintain a minimum membership of one (1) senator per five hundred (500) enrolled students, and a maximum membership of one (1) senator per two hundred fifty (250) enrolled students, rounded up. The enrollment for credit for the previous September shall be the basis for determining the number of representatives.
The Judicial Branch of the SGA provides a system of due process through which students accused of offenses committed on campus (not necessarily within the jurisdiction of the courts) may be referred by the appropriate accuser to the appropriate adjudicator board. All adjudicator power is vested in a system of Hearing Boards with the By-Laws of the University as established by the Board of Trustees. The different boards are: the Campus Appeals Board, the Campus Hearing Board, and the Traffic Hearing Board.
SGA meets every Wednesday at 5:15 P.M. in Dial 225. For meeting locations, please visit Brave Connect.
