The purpose of the Institute is to create awareness and arouse an interest in high school students regarding the opportunities and careers available within the transportation industry. The program is a structured learning environment for 20 participants in a five week non-residential program funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
Participants are selected based on their academic achievement, expression of interest in transportation as a possible career, and written recommendation from the high school counselor or teacher.
Transportation education is increasingly interdisciplinary in its orientation; therefore, students will be exposed to theoretical and practical aspects of all forms of transportation-related disciplines such as economics, marketing, computer science, public policy and public administration.
To be eligible to attend the Institute, the applicant:
- must have achieved rising junior or senior status in high school for the 2014-2015 year, with a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale;
- must have an interest in transportation as a possible career option (as evidenced by required submission of an essay); and
- must provide written recommendation from high school guidance counselor or teacher.
To provide students with the broadest understanding, a variety of educational activities will be incorporated into the program and include:
- Lectures and speaker presentations
- Case studies
- Group projects
- Campus tours
- SAT skills preparation
- Cultural and social awareness activities
- Life skills development (study skills, time management)
- Team building activities
- Library use/research
- Vocabulary development
- Field trips
